Mammillaria hahniana
Mammillaria Tamaokina is a type of cactus that is characterized by its appearance covered with hair-like white spines. Its scientific name is Mammillaria hahniana and it is native to Mexico.
The spheres covered in fluffy white thorns have a warm appearance, and the contrast with the pink flowers is also enjoyable.
■Location
Keep in a sunny place throughout the year. It is especially important to provide ample sunlight during the growing seasons of spring and autumn, and grow in a well-ventilated place. In summer, avoid direct sunlight and keep in bright shade. In winter, as the plant goes dormant, keep in a sunny place indoors.
■Temperature control
It is slightly more sensitive to cold than typical cacti, so it needs to be kept above 7°C in winter. It prefers sunlight, but it is recommended to avoid direct sunlight in summer and to block out the light using lace curtains or cheesecloth.
■Watering
The frequency and amount of watering needs to be adjusted depending on the growing season and dormant season. During the growing season in spring and autumn, water thoroughly until the water flows out from the bottom of the pot after the soil has completely dried out. In summer and winter, the plant enters its dormant period, so watering should be reduced and done sparingly. In summer in particular, the muggy heat makes the roots more susceptible to rot, so water in the cooler evenings, etc., just enough to moisten the soil. In winter, water only a small amount about once a month in the morning on a warm, sunny day.
■Soil and fertilizer
Please use potting soil for succulents and cacti that has good breathability and drainage.
Fertilization is not necessary, but if you do need to, it is a good idea to apply a small amount of diluted liquid fertilizer in the spring and fall during the growing season. It is also effective to mix slow-release fertilizer into the soil when repotting. Be careful not to fertilize too much, as this can cause root rot.
