Astrophytum myriostigma 'Turtle Shell'
This succulent plant grows naturally in Mexico and the southwestern United States. In Japan, it is also called Ranpogyoku.
As its name suggests, the Tortoiseshell Hekiran is a rare variety with a rugged tortoiseshell shape on its ridges. This particular specimen is also twisted in a spiral shape, which, combined with the tortoiseshell, gives it the appearance of a monster's dorsal fin.
Its rough skin and angular lines give it a unique character, and its appeal slowly deepens over time.
■Location
Keep in a sunny location throughout the year. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in midsummer, and use sun protection measures such as lace curtains or cheesecloth. In winter, keep indoors if the temperature drops below 5°C.
■Temperature control
Optimum temperature for growth: Growth is vigorous from spring to autumn, and can be achieved at temperatures above 30-40°C. Maintaining a clear temperature difference between day and night will help the plant to grow into a compact plant.
Dormant period:
In winter, the plant goes into a dormant period, so reduce watering and make sure the temperature does not drop below 5°C.
■Watering
From spring to autumn, water thoroughly when the soil is dry, and in winter, water sparingly.
■Soil and fertilizer
Please use potting soil for succulents and cacti that has good breathability and drainage.
From spring to autumn, apply a small amount of slow-release fertilizer.
