Astrophytum myriostigma 'Turtle Shell'
A succulent plant native to Mexico and the southwestern United States. In Japan, it is also called Ranpougyoku.
As its name suggests, the Tortoise Shell Hekiran is a rare variety with a rugged tortoise shell shape on the ridges. This particular plant is also twisted in a spiral shape, which, combined with the tortoise shell, gives it a shape resembling the dorsal fin of a monster.
With its rough skin and angular lines, this plant is unique and its appeal slowly deepens over time.
■Location <br>Keep in a sunny place throughout the year. Avoid direct sunlight, especially in midsummer, and use shade such as lace curtains or cheesecloth. In winter, keep indoors if the temperature drops below 5°C.
■Temperature control Optimum temperature for growth: Growth is vigorous from spring to autumn, and it can grow even at temperatures above 30-40°C. By maintaining a strict temperature difference between day and night, the plant will grow into a compact plant.
Dormant period:
In winter the plant goes into a dormant period, so reduce watering and make sure the temperature does not drop below 5°C.
■Watering <br>From spring to autumn, water generously when the soil is dry, and in winter, cut back on watering.
■Soil and fertilizer <br>Please use potting soil for succulents and cacti that has good breathability and drainage.
From spring to autumn, apply a small amount of slow-release fertilizer.
